PMBIA Level 1 RE-TEST Riding and Teaching
PMBIA Level 1 MTB Instructor Course – Candidate Retest Description (Registration Information)
Candidates who do not meet the required standard in either the Teaching and/or Riding components during a Level 1 course are eligible to undertake a retest. The retest provides an opportunity to demonstrate competency against the Level 1 standards after further practice and development.
Retest Overview
A retest focuses only on the component(s) previously assessed as “not yet competent”:
Teaching Retest
Riding Retest
Or a combination of both
All retests are conducted by a certified PMBIA Trainer and follow the same assessment criteria and standards as the full course.
Teaching Retest
Candidates will be required to deliver one or more structured practice lessons (typically 10–20 minutes each) in either an open area and/or trail environment.
Assessment Focus:
Planning and executing safe, structured lessons
Appropriate terrain selection and group management
Application of the Lesson Format, Training Wheel, and IDEA Progression
Clear communication using what/why/how explanations
Demonstration of correct techniques at demo quality
Ability to assess riders and provide simple, constructive feedback
Candidates must demonstrate consistent improvement and meet the Level 1 Teaching standard across all key areas.
Riding Retest
Candidates will be assessed on their riding ability in both trail and open area environments, aligned with Level 1 terrain and skill expectations.
Assessment Focus:
Confident riding on technical green, blue, and some single black terrain
Consistent stability, balance, and effective bike-body separation
Controlled braking, efficient cadence, and trail awareness
Ability to maintain line through technical terrain (rocks, roots, uneven surfaces)
Demonstration of all required Level 1 maneuvers with correct technique:
Front and rear wheel lifts
Pedalling wheel lifts
Emergency stops
Switchbacks
Roll-downs
Riders must demonstrate consistency, control, and “demo quality” execution appropriate for instructing beginner to intermediate riders.
Retest Requirements
Retests must be completed within the timeframe specified by PMBIA (typically within 12 months of the original course).
Candidates are encouraged to undertake additional practice, coaching, or mentoring prior to reassessment.
Retests are subject to availability and may be conducted privately or alongside scheduled courses.
Outcome
Pass: Candidate meets Level 1 standard and will be certified.
Not Yet Competent: Further development is required before re-attempting the retest.
